I’m writing week 6 of the #52Ancestors Challenge, about Social Media. I admit, this was a challenging one for me to write about. I had not thought about it before the topics list was released. I realize, there are times I groan looking at my Facebook and Twitter feeds. But it’s never when I look at anything genealogy related. First, it’s been another way to bring regional locations to a larger audience, meaning we don’t always have to make a physical trip. Genealogical societies are able to reach a wider group of people, which both increases their membership, and knowledge sharing. I appreciate how it’s widened my genealogical circle.

Facebook communities often provide an opportunity for individuals to ask simple questions that may be answered directly. Sometimes they have complex questions that require a search “angel”.  I enjoy seeing how people work together to help each other out. And I look forward to when I am able to answer questions or do research for these individuals.

I like how I have been able to keep in touch with the people I’ve met through my genealogy educational path. It’s great to be able to ask questions of each other, celebrate our genealogical victories, career achievements, and personal milestones.

It’s also stretched my skills. I built my own social media page for my business. I’m still learning how to use it to the best advantage.

So yes, I do still groan at some social media content. But then I’ll skip over it and find my happy genealogical place!
